Seasonal Fruits in Lahore: How to Pick the Best Ones

Lahore's fruit markets change with the seasons, and buying what's actually in season is the single easiest way to get better fruit for less money. Summer brings mangoes, melons, peaches and plums in from Punjab's orchards; winter shifts the spotlight to citrus, guavas and strawberries. Fruit picked closer to its natural season has travelled less, ripened properly on the tree or vine, and simply tastes the way it's supposed to.

Picking mangoes is as much about smell as sight. A ripe mango should give slightly under gentle thumb pressure near the stem and carry a sweet, faintly fruity smell at that end, no smell usually means it was picked too early and forced to ripen off the plant. Colour is a weaker signal than most people think, since it varies a lot between varieties like Chaunsa, Sindhri and Anwar Ratol.

For citrus, kinnow, oranges and lemons weight is the trick. Pick two fruits of similar size and go with the heavier one; it usually means more juice inside. The skin should feel firm and slightly springy, not soft or wrinkled, and a few blemishes on the peel rarely affect what's underneath.

Melons (watermelon and cantaloupe) give themselves away with a dull, not shiny, patch on one side that's where they sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. A watermelon that sounds hollow and deep when tapped is usually ready; a flat, dull thud often means it's underripe.

Bananas are one of the few fruits worth buying slightly underripe on purpose, especially if you're not planning to eat them the same day. A few green patches near the stem mean they'll hold for another day or two on the counter before turning fully yellow.

However you shop, buying in smaller, more frequent batches beats stockpiling a week's worth of fruit at once it stays fresher, and you waste less. That's part of why we deliver same-day: it's easier to buy exactly what you need, when you need it, instead of guessing a week ahead.
